FAQ

Learn more about the powerful benefits of reiki.

What is reiki?

Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a Japanese healing technique discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900s.  It promotes relaxation, stress reduction, health and wellbeing through reconnecting the body with its own ability to heal naturally – not just the physical body, but the emotional, spiritual and mental bodies as well. Reiki energy flows from the hands of a practitioner to the receiver.

The word reiki is formed by two Japanese words, rei and ki. While there is not an exact English translation for these words, “rei” can be described as the wisdom of a higher or God-like power, and “ki”can be described as life force energy. “Reiki” means a spiritually guided life force energy. This life force energy exists within us all, without exception.

Reiki is not meant as a substitute for medical, or psychological, diagnosis and treatment. As a Reiki Practitioner, I will not diagnose conditions, perform medical treatment, prescribe substances, or interfere with the treatment of a licensed medical professional. Although profound healing has been reported, results are not guaranteed.

What are the benefits of receiving reiki? What does it feel like?

A reiki treatment feels like a wonderful, glowing radiance that flows through you and all around you. Most all who receive reiki come away feeling an improved sense of peace and wellbeing. Clients report feeling the sensation of a warm flood of peaceful energy wash over the body, some people see colors or feel a tingling sensation, others unexpectedly giggle, weep or gasp as the energy flows. Some fall completely asleep. Some people also experience a brief sensation of pain as blockage is released, similar to a deep-tissue massage on an injured muscle that is momentarily intense but that ultimately results in a feeling of release and the lessening of stress, pain or grief. These releases are all normal and encouraged.

Receiving reiki can provide profound healing, emotional release and growth. It is important to remain open and surrender to receiving – reiki is truly about receiving the life force energy that exists with the exact purpose of flowing through you. It is important that you truly trust your practitioner so that you feel comfortable enough to be honest and to relax into receiving.

Reiki can be used in conjunction with any other medical practice. Reiki does not harm and can provide only benefit. Most people notice a difference in energy and a shift in physical pain after just one session. Age-old injuries and some blockages and traumas that have been building up over a long period of time may require multiple sessions to release. Profound and complete healing is often reported from those who receive reiki.

What happens during a reiki session?

Each session lasts approximately 1.5 to two hours. At the beginning of the session, we will spend about 15 minutes discussing your reasons for scheduling a reiki session. A desire for pure relaxation is reason enough to receive reiki, however you are welcome to discuss any pain or other issues that you may be experiencing. You can also share if there any any areas of your life that you are feeling “stuck” in. I will use a combination of reiki, crystals and aromatherapy to and help restore balance so that you feel more in alignment energetically. I may also provide some affirmations that you can use to help breathe life into your body and mind, goals and daily routine.

You will then remove your shoes and lie down on a massage table remaining remain fully clothed. Dressing for comfort is highly encouraged. After an opening prayer, I will scan your body with my hands, hovering over certain areas and also placing my hands on certain areas such as your head, shoulders, arms, stomach, legs and feet, so please let me know at the beginning of the session if you are sensitive to touch. Your job during a session is to simply relax and open yourself to receiving reiki energy. Reiki is truly about being open to receiving the life force energy that exists with the exact purpose of wanting to flow through you.

At the end of the session, I will seal your aura and we will discuss any messages that I may have received during your session. It will be important for you to drink plenty of water following your session.

What is a reiki practitioner?

A reiki practitioner facilitates the flow of universal life force energy. The hands of a reiki practitioner act as mirror or a jumper cable for the client's own energy. In the way that a vehicle with a dead battery benefits from a jump-start, when a person's energy flow becomes blocked due to stress, physical injury or an emotional trauma such as shame or guilt, a reiki practitioner channels universal life force energy and connects it to the client's own energy, reminding it to flow freely and giving it a boost to clear away blockages and physical and emotional pain.

The energy is not coming from the practitioner, but rather through the practitioner. The practitioner acts a channel through which universal life force energy flows – she does not give the client any of her own energy, nor does the client pass any energy on to her. The energy which passes through the practitioner is limitless and infinite.

A Reiki practitioner has clearly opened her reiki channel and connected to life force energy through a process called attunement or initiation.

What is attunement?

Attunement is challenging to define, because it is not a physical, visible practice like yoga or massage. An attunement is a spiritual initiation that takes place between a Reiki Master and a student; it essentially means to begin, as in taking in your first breath of life. Once a person has been attuned, that person is attuned for life.  Just as one can find herself starting over yet again in many ways in life, some people receive reiki attunement multiple times to deepen their connection or to experience it from a fresh perspective. Anyone can be attuned to reiki, including children and animals.
